In Fall 2021, I conducted research on Black Representation in Mainstream Media under the guidance of Dr. Tina Harris at Louisiana State University. This research was officially completed in Fall 2024 and served as a foundation for my ongoing academic pursuits. I aim to extend this work into my PhD program, where I plan to further explore the topic in depth as part of my dissertation.
In what ways is the Black community portrayed in media?
SAPPHIRE
The Sapphire stereotype portrays Black women as angry, aggressive,
loud, and emasculating. This image is often used to depict Black women as domineering and overbearing, particularly in their relationships with Black men.
BUCK
This stereotype has its roots in the era of slavery and Reconstruction, when Black men were often depicted as a threat to white society, especially through sexualized
and violent imagery.
TRAGIC MULATTO
The Tragic Mulatto stereotype depicts mixed-race individuals,
particularly women, as doomed to lives of confusion, alienation, and sorrow because
they exist between two racial worlds.
