SGA to discuss expanding tailgating, collaborating with student organizations

February 14, 2017

On Monday, Feb. 13, the University of Louisiana at Lafayette’s Student Government Association executive board and senators discussed upcoming events regarding SGA presidents’ statewide meeting with Gov. John Bel Edwards on Feb. 14, in addition to, UL Lafayette’s search for a new academic provost.

President Wil Perkins swore the newly filled vacancy positions for the College of Nursing, College of Engineering, Graduate School and College of Liberal Arts.

Perkins said the university will host meetings this Tuesday and Thursday as well as next Tuesday and Thursday for the new academic provost, or chief academic official. Students are able to sit in on some interviews to ask the potential provosts any questions regarding their plans for the university. The meetings are from 2:45-3:30 p.m. The location has not been announced.

Vice President Mary McMahon said SGA is looking for organizations to partner with for future events. She said organizations interested should contact the SGA office.

McMahon also added that the SGA representation at UL Lafayette’s Greek Retreat was a success and boasted an “awesome turnout.”

Senators also approved the organization’s budget, which is $107,362. Thomas Schumacher, SGA treasurer, said $13,000 of the budget rolled over from last semester.

Schumacher noted that UL Lafayette’s enrollment numbers have been calculated; however, he said discussion will wait until next week’s meeting.

SGA also discussed plans on expanding student tailgating to Bourgeois Park next fall. Organizations are encouraged to attend the meeting with the executive board on Thursday at 5 p.m. in the SGA office. The discussion will include tailgating spaces and the layout of the new tailgate section. One representative per organization is required.

SGA scholarship applications are expected to be available in the coming days. SGA gives away 40 domestic and four international scholarships per semester, and all students can apply.

For unfinished business, appropriation 51 was approved. Appropriation 64 was tabled until next week and appropriation 77 is still pending.
